But don't believe me, see what the press has to say!
The Media Lab is a pretty high-profile place, and the press has been quite
interested in wearable computing in recent years. I like to think I
finally know how to communicate with the press effectively, but
sometimes... well I'll let the quotes speak for themselves:
-
"Too Jolly To Be Scary" [AP
Newswire, June 8, 1998] (cached)
"The third researcher, Brad Rhodes, looks too jolly to be scary. His kinky
hair is trying to escape from under a cap which has an eyepiece dangling
from its brim. He clutches a small keypad in his left hand, and his
fingers twitch furiously as he takes notes on a miniature computer."
- "Mr. Rhodes, who admits he doesn't have a girlfriend..."
[Wall Street Journal, June 16, 1997]
"Mr. Rhodes, who admits
he doesn't have a girlfriend at the moment, says his group is concerned
about how people will react to wearable computers."
- "...the geeks dream bigger dreams of even smaller computers..."
[Washington Times, May 25, 1999]
"Brad Rhodes, one of the MIT
computer students, says he's developing software that will supply the PC
wearer with information for any given situation... Whether you get a date,
however, is still up to you."
These are better...
- "With Wearable Computers You Will Remember Everything" [New
York Times, November 13, 1997]
This is a 3-page write up on the
Remembrance Agent, from their Personal Technologies section.
- "Bradley Mnemonic" [Wired Magazine,
June 1996] (cached)
I don't think they let you graduate from the Media
Lab until you have a blurb in Wired. This is a one-paragrapher tucked in a
corner somewhere, but it's enough to claim I have one.
- "Glemmer du, så husker den det ord for ord - for dig"
[ComputerWorld, December 1997]
I have no idea what this article
says. Good picture of me though.
- "The Day Computers are worn" [AXIS, March / April 1998]
This is in Japanese, which is even worse than my Swedish. Another good
picture though; purple is definitely my color.
- "Wearable Computers wait for Mobile Services" [Nikkei Electronics
Asia (Causeway Bay, Hong Kong), March 1999]
At least for this one
I have a translation. In the original there's a picture of me with circles
and arrows all over it and annotations in Kanji.
- "Gizmo Garments" [Weekly Reader, November 6, 1998]
One of my
favorites. If my first-grade teacher could only see me now!
- "A Remembrance of Text Past" [Linux Gazette,
April 1999] (cached)
Leave it to the Linux journals like this one understand the technology in intimate detail... right down to my bugs.
- "Wearable Devices: New Ways to Manage Information" [IEEE Computer,
January 1999]
This is a great example of the best way to get a good
write-up: have friends of yours writing the article.
